10 Tips for Creating a Social Media Content Plan for Your Small Business

Social media is one of the most powerful tools for small businesses to connect with customers, build brand awareness, and even boost sales. But posting randomly and hoping for the best isn’t a winning strategy. To truly make an impact, you need a well-thought-out content plan.

1. Think about what you want to achieve

You know what they say, failing to plan is planning to fail. So, ask yourself: what do you want to achieve with social media? Your goals will shape your entire content plan. For example, maybe you want to:

  • Build brand awareness
  • Drive traffic to your website
  • Generate leads or sales
  • Engage with your audience
  • Establish authority in your niche

Make sure your goals are specific, measurable, and achievable. For example, instead of saying, “I want more followers,” try, “I want to gain 50 new followers in the next three months.” Try to make sure your goals are achievable, though – and bear in mind that if you work in a niche sector, you’ll need to adjust your expectations accordingly.

2. Make sure you know your audience

Of course, when you started your business, you probably did a lot of work to understand your target market. Apply this knowledge to your social media plan. Who are you trying to reach, and what kind of content do they like? You could try defining your ideal customer by considering:

  • Demographics. Age, gender, location, income level, etc.
  • Interests. What do they care about? What hobbies or challenges do they have?
  • Behaviours. Which platforms do they use? When are they most active online?

If you already have customers, ask them directly about their social media habits.

3. Choose the right platforms

Remember: you don’t need to be everywhere at once. Focus on the platforms where your audience is most active. For example:

  • Instagram is great for sharing visuals
  • Facebook can be perfect for community-building and engaging a slightly older audience
  • LinkedIn is where you want to be for B2B businesses and professional services
  • TikTok is excellent for creative, short-form videos targeting younger audiences
  • Threads and Bluesky can be useful for news, updates, and real-time engagement

Pick one or two platforms to start and expand as you get more comfortable.

4. Create Content Themes

Variety is the spice of life, so you’ll want to keep your content varied and interesting. Plan around a few key themes. These could include:

  • Tips, how-tos, or industry insights
  • Show what goes on in your business behind-the-scenes
  • Testimonials or case studies
  • Showcase your product or services in action
  • Tie your posts to celebrations or events

For example, if you run a bakery, your themes might be recipes, behind-the-scenes baking clips, customer stories, and seasonal specials.

5. Plan your posting schedule

Consistency is key on social media. However, quality beats quantity every time, so create a realistic posting schedule that works for you. For example:

  • Instagram: 2-3 posts per week, plus daily Stories.
  • Facebook: 3 posts per week.
  • LinkedIn: 1-2 posts per week.

Use tools like Google Calendar, Trello, or dedicated scheduling apps like Hootsuite to map out your posts in advance.

6. Write engaging (authentic) captions

Captions and introductory copy can be tough if you’re not a natural writer. You might be tempted to get some help from AI tools, and there’s nothing wrong with using it for a bit of inspiration. But, bear in mind that your audience wants to hear from YOU, not AI.

Here’s some tips:

  • Don’t overthink it. If you’d say it to a friend, it’s probably good enough for your caption. Keep your language natural, use contractions, and avoid jargon that might feel cold or overly corporate.

  • Don’t try to cram too much into one caption. Pick a single idea or theme and stick to it, whether it’s about a product, a story, or a moment you want to share.

  • Attention spans are short, especially on social media. Aim for brevity while still conveying your message. If you need more space, make the first sentence punchy to encourage people to read more.

  • Write your caption, then go back and cut out anything unnecessary. Every word should serve a purpose.

  • Use line breaks, emojis, or bullet points to make your caption easy to scan.

  • Writing takes practice, so don’t worry if it doesn’t feel perfect straightaway. The more you write, the more natural it will become.

7. Use visuals

It might be an obvious point, but social media is a visual platform, so invest time in creating eye-catching images, graphics, and videos. You don’t need expensive equipment - tools like Canva or your smartphone camera can work just as well while you’re still starting out.

Keep these tips in mind:

  • Use your brand colours and fonts for consistency – ideally, you want people to associate your brand with a particular look and aesthetic.
  • Make your visuals clear and clutter-free.
  • Experiment with video, which can often get higher engagement.
  • Sometimes, less is more. On LinkedIn for example, pictures of you or your team members will likely perform well. People like to see the person (or people) behind a produce or service.
  • Don’t be afraid to have a bit of fun, if it fits your brand.

8. Engage with Your Audience

Here’s a shocking stat – 73% of social media users agree that if a brand doesn’t respond on social, they’ll buy from a competitor. Your audience wants to feel like you care about them, their concerns and their opinions. Take time to respond to comments, answer questions, and acknowledge mentions.

9. Keep track of what works (and what doesn’t)

Once you’ve implemented your content plan, track how it’s performing. Most platforms offer analytics tools to help you measure:

  • Which posts are getting the most engagement.
  • When your audience is most active.
  • How your follower count is growing.

Use this data to tweak your plan and focus on what works best. Set aside 30 minutes each week to dive into your platform insights. Track post types, engagement rates, and best posting times. Look for patterns that inform your strategy. Most of all, don't be afraid to experiment. Social media often rewards businesses that stay flexible and responsive to their audience's preferences.

10. Stay consistent

Remember, it might take a while before you start seeing results on social media, but don’t let that discourage you. Keep showing up, stay authentic, and the results will follow.
